Difference is You conference 2025 call for proposals |
The Difference is You committee is getting an early start on planning its 2025 conference. Difference Is You is the only statewide conference designed especially for library support staff and non-MLS librarians. However, all are welcome. In 2024, the conference welcomed over 170 attendees to the Indiana State Library. The 2025 conference will be held on Friday, Sept. 19 at the Indiana State Library. The annual The Difference is You conference is a training event for library support staff and paraprofessionals. The event also sees the presentation of The Difference is You Award. Those interested in presenting at the 2025 conference can submit a proposal here. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: budgets, collection management, communications skills, genealogy, grants and how to find them, keeping libraries relevant, programming, reducing library waste and unhoused patrons. Time slots for all sessions are 50 minutes, including time for questions from the audience. Submissions for presentations, panel discussions, workshops and other formats are welcome. Proposals due Jan. 31 and notification of acceptance or decline will be in March. For more information, visit the conference website.

Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library announces special art Gallery exhibit
|
The Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library has announced a special art Gallery exhibit showcasing historical artwork and photographs from the library’s Indiana Room archives. This unique collection, on display from now through February 2025, will highlight the rich history and heritage of Plainfield, Hendricks County and the state of Indiana.
The exhibit will feature artwork from local and Indiana artists, along with historical photographs that capture Plainfield’s past. The paintings and illustrations depict the landscapes and landmarks that have shaped the town and surrounding areas.
The Indiana Room, located within the library, is a treasure trove of resources for anyone interested in local and state history. It houses books on local history and geography, family genealogy records, information about famous Hoosiers and notable residents of Plainfield and Hendricks County, as well as books authored by local writers.
“The gallery exhibit provides an opportunity to connect with our shared history in a truly meaningful way,” said Reann Poray of the Plainfield-Guilford Township Public Library. “By bringing these pieces out of the archives and into our Gallery, we hope to inspire a deeper appreciation for the stories that shaped our community.”
Visitors of all ages are invited to explore the free exhibit and learn more about the library’s Indiana Room. For more information about the exhibit or the Indiana Room, please visit the library's website. |
North Webster Community Public Library and Syracuse Public Library hold third annual Teen Art Contest
|
The Syracuse Public Library and the North Webster Community Public Library have announced their third annual Teen Art Contest. This year, students in grades 6-12 are invited to submit mural designs for a fence located outside of the North Webster Community Public Library. Submissions will be open from now until Feb. 14. Students may submit solo designs or submit in groups of up to four individuals. Mural templates can be picked up - and finished designs can be returned - at either library.
Completed submissions will be displayed at each library and community members will have a chance to vote on their favorite designs. The winners will bring their designs to life in spring of 2025.
Those who need feedback, inspiration or supplies can join the libraries for an “Art Contest Workshop.” Two sessions will be available, and students may attend one or both sessions. They will take place on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 12-2 p.m. at the North Webster Community Public Library, and on Saturday, Jan. 18, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Syracuse Turkey-Creek Township Library. Welcome to Digital Collection Highlights. Every other week, librarians at the Indiana State Library share images from the library's ever-growing digital collections. Visit the Digital Collections page to view the latest additions. |
General Anthony Wayne, born in January 1745, is the namesake of Fort Wayne, and served as the principal United States negotiator for the Treaty of Greenville. Wayne is prominently featured in the Indiana State Library’s stained-glass windows and painted murals by artist J. Scott Williams.
Visitors to the Indiana State Library can find Anthony Wayne in the mural above the entry to the Indiana Authors Room, titled “The Winning of the State.” The mural highlights key events, such as the Surrender of Fort Sackville, the Treaty of Greenville, William Henry Harrison and the Native American leader Tecumseh. Additionally, General Wayne appears in the central panel of the stained glass in the Great Hall.
J. Scott Williams meticulously prepared sketches before committing to the final scenes. Many of these sketches are preserved in the Indiana State Library’s Rare Books and Manuscripts Division. |
Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library to offer free English classes for beginners |
The Hussey-Mayfield Memorial Public Library has announced a series of free English classes for beginners. The 12-week program is designed to help individuals of all backgrounds and experiences. No prior knowledge of English is necessary. The only requirement is that participants must be 14 years of age or above. This is a completely free course thanks to the generosity of Welcome Pattern, a local nonprofit organization.
The program begins on Jan. 8 and the classes will meet every Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at the Zionsville Branch of the library.
During the course, participants will build basic English skills. They will learn how to introduce themselves, understand simple phrases, ask questions and respond to questions. They will also develop speaking and listening skills by practicing conversations with other students and instructors and getting real-time feedback to improve their pronunciation. Additionally, participants will start reading simple English texts and begin writing basic sentences. The course is designed to help one feel more empowered to use English in their daily life.
Those who have access to a laptop, are encouraged you to bring it along. However, the library understands that not everyone has a device. The course will accommodate those who don't so they can still participate fully in the course. It is recommended to bring a notebook and writing utensil.
Click here to read more about the program and to register for the "English for Beginners" course. |
