Winter hiking at the Parks
submitted by the DNR
Join the increasing number of Hoosiers who hike during winter and immerse yourself in the outdoors year round. Winter hiking offers a healthy way to exercise and a mental break while surrounded by nature.
Winter hiking takes a little more planning than hiking during the warmer months. Follow these tips to ensure you're ready.
Check the weather forecast before you go.
Tell someone where you will be hiking and when you'll return.
Bring plenty of snacks and drink lots of water. It's deceptively easy to get dehydrated in the cold.
Layer your clothing,, beginning with a wicking (perspiration-removing) layer, followed by insulating garments, topped by a wind and/or waterproof shell.
Know the signs of frostbite and hypothermia.
Know your limits. It's okay to call it a day or reschedule the hike for another time if weather or fatigue interferes.
