Laura June Marshall Stickels
Laura June Marshall Stickels, age 91, died on November 9, 2024 at NHC Health Care in
Franklin, Tennessee.
She was born to Elsworth and Frankie (Martin) Marshall on a beautiful morning, June 1, 1933 at
the home of her parents in Washinton County. Her name was to be Laura May, but her doctor
suggested they name her Laura “June” since it was such a beautiful June morning. She lived in
or near Salem, Indiana until July 2013 (80 years) when she moved to her retirement home in
Lebanon, Tennessee.
Laura graduated from Salem High School with the class of 1951. Upon graduation she was
hired as an office clerk at Production Credit where she had been working part time with her
sister since she was 16. She continued working there off and on until her retirement in 1994.
She was also employed for 7 years at the former Wel-Met Company.
Laura and her sisters all loved to sing and would often spend Sunday afternoons harmonizing.
Before her marriage, she and her sister, Betty, joined the Sweet Adelines Barbershop Chorus in
Salem and Laura was delighted to be included as the tenor in the first Barbershop Quarter of
the Salem organization. It was a picture of this quartet that introduced her to her future husband,
Bill Stickels, who she met and married in 1958.
She and Bill were married on August 24, 1958 at Salem and celebrated 50 years together until
his passing on May 14, 2009. To this union were born two sons and two daughters, Jennifer
(Robert) Mohon, Jim (Kara) Stickels, Julie (Dwight) King, and Joe (Katherine) Stickels. Other
survivors include 7 grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and all siblings — Kathyrn Ratts, Karl
Marshall, Madge Day, Ernest Marshall, and Betty Davis Gholson.
Laura was a member of the Adams Avenue Church of Christ in Lebanon, Tennessee at her
passing, having been baptized at Paoli, Indiana in 1959, and member of the Fort Hill Church of
Christ where she had attended since birth.
Laura was a devoted Christian woman who delighted in sharing her love and faith
with others through her card ministry. Visitation is at Weathers Funeral Home November 16, 2024 from 10:00am to 12:00pm with funeral service at 12:00pm. Funeral services will be officiated by Marvin Purkhiser.
