Washington County Youth Foundation Supports Early Literacy Through Fundraiser

Parents of Kindergarten through third grade students at Bradie Shrum and East Washington Elementary schools might see something new in their child’s backpack.  The Washington County Youth Foundation has launched their annual “Minis for Pennies” fundraiser.  According to Raegan Zweydorff, Youth Foundation Facilitator, “This fundraiser is crucial in funding the Happily Ever After Program as well as supporting the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, both of which encourage early literacy and a love of reading.”  The Happily Ever After Program pairs high school volunteer readers with 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms where they model behavior that shows younger students that reading is cool.  The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is a free service that is available to all children under the age of 5 in Washington County. Once they enroll, a book is mailed to their home every month until their 5th birthday.

Students have been given an M&M mini tube to enjoy. In return, students are asked to perform simple tasks and extra chores around the house for change. Students are asked to bring the change in the mini tube back to school before February 10th.

We could not do this fundraiser without the generosity of our awesome sponsors.  Thank you to Future Electric, Jason Wade State Farm, ACE Hardware of Salem, First Harrison Bank, and Weathers Funeral Home
